Medusa’s Makeup: Lipstick Review & Swatches

March 9, 2014, 41 Comments

leyenda_idiomas

On November 2013 I received in my LipFactory box a lipstick from Medusa’s Makeup and I fell in love. You can see that original post here. I loved the lipstick so much that when the company had a black friday sale I took advantage of it and bought the whole lipstick collection. On their web site they don’t go into details describing the colors, their textures or finishes. So it’s really a box of surprises as you’re not sure what to expect. Me personally, I had already tried “Triple X” so I was expecting something similar. The truth is that the whole collection is nothing like “Triple X” when it comes to texture, consistency and finish. It doesn’t mean they’re bad, they’re just different. I’ll be sharing some pictures and swatches of each lipstick so you can get a better idea of the consistency, texture and finish of each. I warn you, this will be a picture heavy post. 🙂 (by the way…read ’til the end for a special surprise!!)

packaging

Let’s start by talking about the packaging…you can’t say it’s not beautiful! The cap is in the shape of a rose…it’s AWESOME! I felt in love with it before even opening it to see the color. It’s just gorgeous. The packaging feels sturdy, and holds the lipstick well.

I made two swatches of each  lipstick. One with only one swipe and the other multiple times to build the color. Here are the swatches…

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches: Rio, Lolita, Skid Row

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches: Undead, Red Square, Baroque

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches: Triple X, Miami

Here are the lip swatches. I’ll share my bare lips first so you can compare and see how pigmented the colors are.

barelips

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches Rio

Rio is a very pretty orange color. It has a glossy finish. The color is not very opaque, but it gives a pretty shade of color. It goes well with the colors for spring.

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches Lolita

Lotita has a very glossy finish. The color isn’t very opaque, but it does apply well.

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches Skid Row

Skid Row is such a pretty color! It has more of a frost finish with some micro glitter. It applies smoothly and the color just looks beautiful.

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches Undead

Undead is one of my least favorite shades. The truth is that I really wanted to like it, but the application wasn’t the best. What happened is that the color isn’t very opaque, and it’s not a color that you can build up to intensify the color. Which in part could be good if you’re looking for a more translucent violet lip color. Maybe I was just expecting the same color payoff as Triple X, but this lipstick was just hard to get it to work for me. I have to give it another try and see if I can change my mind about it.

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches Red Square

Red Square is a red shade that is very glossy. It was a bit hard to get it to apply evenly, but it looks pretty once you get it to work.

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches Baroque

Baroque is one that I liked a lot. It has a hint of glitter that is not overpowering, but the finish is not very glossy. It’s somewhere between a matte and glossy finish. It looks very pretty and applies easily. I need to use it more ’cause it really is a beautiful color.

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches Miami

Miami… I’m not really sure how to express myself about this color. It’s definitely not my favorite at all. I think it’s a combination of the shade of pink, the color payoff, and the application. The color is very dry and it feels so dry on your lips. It has a matte finish. In all, the application was just terrible! I felt like I was applying a chalk on my lips. This one just did not work at all for me. If anyone else has tried this shade, please let me know how it has worked for you so that I know if it’s an issue with me, or this particular shade.

Medusa's Makeup Lipstick Swatches Triple X

Love it!!

Triple X is my favorite out of the whole collection. As a matter of fact, it is the first one I tried and the one guilty of making me buy the whole lipstick collection. I love this color. I love the glossy finish and color payoff. The color is so pretty and it applies so easily. The formula they used to make this particular shade I would dare to compare with more high-end lipsticks. In fact, I compared this shade to Urban Decay’s Anarchy lipstick in a past post (you can read about it here if you’d like). This shade I like a lot, a lot!! Love it!!

Medusa's Makeup Lipgloss in Bite Me

Other than the lipsticks, I was able to try one of their lip gloss in the color “Bite Me.” It smells so yummy, like melon. It looks very pretty on the lips. It’s pigmented enough to wear alone, but you could also use it on top of a lipstick.

Medusa's Makeup Lipgloss in Bite Me Swatches

Something Medusa’s Makeup failed at doing was to include a description for their lipsticks to explain each color and their finish. This is so important, specially when you’re buying online and can’t see the lipstick before purchasing. I hope it is something they will consider adding to their website in the future. Just like I mention the bad, I’ll also mention the good…they have an excellent customer service. I had some issues with my order and they were so quick to answer and take care of the issue. I love it when a company has excellent attention and care for their customers. I would definitely purchase from them again.

Each lipstick retails for $12.00 each. On their website they have an offer that you can purchase all 8 lipsticks for $59.00 (you would pay about $7.38 for each). The lip gloss retails for $8.00 each and also like the lipsticks, you can buy the whole collection (10 total) for $29.00 (they would be a little less than $3.00 each!). I haven’t been able to try their eyeshadow, which I would love to, but I did try two other products that I’ll be reviewing soon.

What do you think? Which is your favorite color? I hope these swatches will help you choose the color you’d like at the time to purchase.

Con amor, Jennie
